Ah, Tony
I never watched the Sopranos. Not a single episode. So I suppose I don't have much of a right to comment on the final thirty seconds of the program that has been shown all over the place. The hell I don't...this is a blog...it 's the last place on earth a person needs to be qualified to comment.
My lack of involvement does mean that I don't have enough information to speculate as to how ther show should have ended, but it seems to me that viewers are missing something. That last scene where Tony looks up? He's not about to get whacked or to finish off one of the other characters. We don't see his hands, only his eyes, and then to black. He has a gun under the table. He shoots US! Whang! Except there was no whang...you never hear the one that gets you. He kills the viewer, and with that instant death, all is suddenly black. See? There was something at the end. We were just too dead to see it.

Jon, I am thrilled to say I haven't watched this show. I tried renting the first season and before I had endured five episodes, I groaned and shut it off. This was one of the ugliest, most unfortunate series ever made. Maybe it's just me, but I don't enjoy watching a show where the protagonist is a greasy crimelord. and much of the action revolves around him and hius cronies screaming at their families and one another.
I've never understood how anyone could watch this, nonetheless follow these detestable individuals through as many seasons as the series ran.
What frightened me as well was that the ending of the Sopranos came with the same frenzy as the Paris Hilton nonsense. Come to think of it, the two are significant icons of a declining American culture.
Me? I'm avoiding television this summer. If I'm going to rot my mind, I'll do it with lighter fare.
Jon,
No shock -- I adored the show. It related to my life more than any other television show ever. It's writing was spectacular, adored by a huge variety of people, and I totally buy your interpretation of the ending. I loved the ending, which was stolen from John Sayle's Limbo, a movie that ends the exact same way. I think it was an honest way to go out. And I was so glad Tony didn't get shot -- after all, he's my television husband and it just wouldn't be right. :)
Michelle, in case you're reading this..I gotta ask: It related to your life????
yeah Jon...your on to something. I have heard alot of people say Tony got whacked...but what most forget is POV. The show was never told from Tony's point of view so when the screen goes black how could it be Tony? I think it is the viewer that gets whacked. Just like a hit in real life...one minute your looking around the next black. BTW, by whacking the viewer you take care of the concept of a Sopranos movie and/or reunion episode.
The sopranos now sleep with the fishes. RIP
My adoration for many series run on HBO dealt more with their ability to reach outside of some prescribed box. I enjoyed the lighting, the dialogue, what I felt was a more honest look into another's life. The nicest thing, I think, was that it allowed me to appreciate the art of a scene without making judgements. And yes, there are common themes that can connect a mob boss to a teacher in this world.
I haven't actually seen the series in years, but the people I know who watched it enjoyed the ending. And I'm happy that some wonderfully creative people who had a vision got some props.
I can't comment either. Never saw an episode.
What gets me about the Sopranos is nobody gets the NAME - ie a MAN called SOPRANO is a MAN WITHOUT BALLS- duh! but then people are in general thick ... ho-hum

Hey Uncle Jon! This was the only way I could figure out how to leave a message on your blog. I ended up making my own blog profile, haha, that makes, lets see, MySpace, facebook, live journal etc. etc. etc. Anyway, I better say something about The Sopranos. Never saw an episode, but your interpretation of the finale makes it seem like a pretty clever show. Well, clever, I don't know about pretty.
Ha!!!
Dang, I love your ending.
(And yes, I watched the show. But then again, I also loved Deadwood. Go figure.)
